Uber removes the five dollar surcharge on uber assist rides
Today we’re relieved to share that Uber reverses the $5 charge on Uber Assist Rides.
Following concerns raised by our community about the additional $5 charge for Uber Assist rides, Guide Dogs NSW/ACT and Vision Australia met with Uber to discuss the impact of the surcharge and advocate for a fairer outcome.
Today's reversal is an important outcome for the disability sector and a powerful example of a united front.
We also thank the team at Uber for listening and acting quickly and our team hopes this sets a precedent across the services sector as people with a disability should never be asked to pay an increased fare.
General Manager of Social Change, Tamara Searant says it best, “it shouldn’t take a campaign to fix issues like this. A strengthened Disability Discrimination Act would help make surcharges like this unlawful from day one.”
Whilst there is still work to be done to continue advocating for an inclusive community for everyone, moments like this are worth celebrating. They show what is possible when we advocate together.
