Guide Dog Puppies Named by Young Patients at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead
12 November 2021: Guide Dogs has spread some puppy love at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead where young patients were given the opportunity to choose the names of three new spring puppies!
Fawn, Fredrick and Frodo from the F litter were named by children – many who were staying at the hospital in recent months under quarantine conditions, while family members received treatment elsewhere for COVID-19.
Guide Dogs Head Vet Caroline Moeser, said, “We are so thankful that we were able to bring some joy to the kids, their families and all the staff at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead, especially over the past few months when we know it has been extremely tough for so many people.”
“The kids did a great job of suggesting names for our beautiful pups, though some of the more creative names, such as Flapjack, didn’t quite make the cut!” she added.
As well as the opportunity to name the new puppies, children and their families also received some exclusive videos of other recent Guide Dog puppy litters to watch in their own time and help boost spirits at the hospital.
“The COVID-19 pandemic has changed the way we have been able to provide entertainment to our patients so to be able to give our patients the opportunity to not only name the new litter of Guide Dog puppies, but also to meet some of the puppies virtually was amazing.
“Our patients took the task very seriously and are very proud to have been involved,” Debra Fowler, Entertainment Officer at The Children’s Hospital at Westmead said.
It takes $50,000 to breed, raise and train each life changing Guide Dog that will go on to make a difference in the life of a person with low vision or blindness.
