About the School Support Dog Program.

The value of School Support Dogs is widely accepted across educational environments. Studies support that a friendly and well-trained dog can improve the wellbeing of children by lowering anxiety and increasing confidence, simply by making the classroom a happier and more enjoyable place to be.

The role of a School Support Dog.

The nuanced role of a School Support Dog is shaped by the dog’s individual skillset, preferences and the unique requirements of the school or education facility. Across various age groups, year levels and educational departments, a dog can play a pivotal role in offering support.

Here are some of the ways a School Support Dog can help your students and teachers:

  • Offering a reassuring presence and assistance to new students or students seeking support.
  • Comforting children during critical emotional moments and transitions to and from school and from classroom to classroom.
  • Easing nerves and anxiety when students attend meetings with staff in the school’s office.
  • Creating a soothing environment for open discussions.
  • Accompanying Chaplains and peer-support staff during critical incidents to enhance the support provided to children or staff experiencing trauma or other challenges.
  • Attending various milestone events like sports carnivals and exams, positively contributing to the overall atmosphere and wellbeing of students and staff.
  • Mindful walks and casual interactions outside the classroom or office for staff to unwind and connect with the dog in a relaxed environment.
  • Providing comfort and support for children when they attend the school counsellor.
  • Participating in celebratory events to foster a positive and supportive atmosphere.
  • Breaking down barriers to engagement and interaction between students and staff during interactive training days and events.
  • Encouraging staff to take breaks with the dog prompts the design of a designated chill-out space in the staff room.
  • Enhancing morning greetings at the school entrance with cheerful interactions and relaxed check-ins.
