About the event

Love audio books? And podcasts? Heard of audio films? Not so much? Let’s change that!

You are invited to the Vivid Sydney Audio Drama event – an innovative showcase of audio description (AD) that will introduce this audio-only form of film and TV to a mainstream audience, and hopefully help increase its presence on Australian TV.

Audio Drama is on Thursday 9 June, 3:00-4:30pm, at the UTS Great Hall.

At Audio Drama, you have the chance to experience AD as intended – as standalone audio entertainment, without the distraction of the visuals. You’ll hear a selection of AD clips from popular Australian TV shows, and have an opportunity to discuss them with a panel of AD enthusiasts and professionals – reporter Nas Campanella, ‘Gardening Australia’ host Costa Georgiadis, dancer and advocate Holly Craig, NITV producer Travis Cardona and audio describer Kevin Geldard.

AD needs your support as its foothold on Australian TV is still tenuous. After over 25 years of campaigning, AD was introduced on free-to-air Australian TV in mid-2020, through federal government funding to the ABC and SBS. This funding was recently renewed for three years, but permanent funding would give broadcasters, providers and audience members the certainty to be able to invest in the technology needed for AD. This event will raise awareness of the value of AD, and hopefully garner support for its continued presence on Australian TV.

This FREE event is presented by Vivid Ideas in collaboration with the ABC, SBS, Stan, Accessible Arts, Blind Citizens Australia, the Fred Hollows Foundation, Guide Dogs NSW/ACT, Red Bee Media and The SubStation.
