Guide Dogs commits to becoming employer of choice for people with disability

December 07, 2023

Guide Dogs NSW/ACT has set a target to have 15 percent of its workforce identify as having a disability by 2027, committing to becoming an employer of choice for people with a disability.

This quota is part of the Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2024-2027, released in December 2023.

The Plan identifies three priorities:

  • People: Be recognised as an employer of choice for people with disability through accessible and inclusive workplace and practices.
  • Practices: Be recognised as a leader of accessibility and inclusion in our places and practices.
  • Leadership: Be recognised by our community, government and industry as a leader in accessibility and inclusion.

Guide Dogs NSW/ACT Chief Executive Officer Dale Cleaver said the organisation would be actively tracking the progress of the plan to ensure its standards were being met.

“I am proud of our commitment to leading innovation and continued improvement in accessibility and inclusion across all our environments,” he said.

“We will adapt to our Client and community needs and drive social change through demonstrating best practice and using our knowledge and passionate to advocate and educate.

“For more than 60 years, Guide Dogs has worked toward making a world that is inclusive and accessible for everyone with low vision or blindness.

“Our Disability Inclusion Action Plan builds on this commitment. We aim to actively encourage, value and welcome staff with a disability; ensure our built, digital and communication environments are accessible; and embrace inclusion innovation for our staff, Clients and stakeholders.”

The Plan has been strongly shaped by an independent audit undertaken by the Australian Network on Disability and research into best practice. Guide Dogs NSW/ACT’s staff and customers were also heavily involved in its creation.

The Plan will be an important building block for the organisation’s larger Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Plan.
