National Stroke Week 2019 – A Client Story
Three years ago Ted Barend experienced an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) and a stroke.
Prior to his neurological event, he was a Financial Controller and Office Manager. This event transformed his life overnight. Not only did he have to learn to walk again, he also had to learn how to navigate the world with a neurological form of low vision. Two year has since past, and with the assistance of Guide Dogs NSW/ACT Neurological Vision Impairment team and others around him, he once again feels confident to live and get out and about in the community. He enjoys visiting the Canberra War Memorial and walking around the local area and fulfilling his ambition ‘to be the best he can’.
Ted is a highly successful and determined individual who enjoys playing the guitar, visiting places of interest and getting out and about in the community. However three years ago, after he experienced an arteriovenous malformation (AVM) and a stroke, his tenacious character and the activities he enjoys so much had the potential to become distant and fond memories.

Two year has since past, and with the assistance of Guide Dogs NSW/ACT Neurological Vision Impairment team and others around him, he once again feels confident to live life and get out and about in the local community. He is once again enjoying life and fulfilling his ambition ‘to be the best he can’.
