New automated Audio Tactile Pedestrian Signals in NSW to reduce risk of contracting COVID-19
Please be aware that the NSW Government is expanding its network of automated Audio Tactile Pedestrian Signals to major intersections and health precincts so that people no longer need to “press the button” when crossing roads with high pedestrian traffic. This is being done to further contain the risk of COVID-19 spreading throughout the community.
To discourage people from pressing the button, a case has been placed over the lower half of the audio tactile component. Importantly, this does not impact the ability to feel the vibration of the call button component nor does it affect any braille/tactile street signage installed on the poles
Where are the new automatic Audio Tactile Pedestrian Signals?
Transport for NSW commenced its roll out of the new automatic Audio Tactile Pedestrian Signals on Monday, 23 March 2020. Once installed, these signals will operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Transport for NSW has taken a targeted approach by implementing this public health measure where pedestrian activity is high and would be most effective in limiting the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Implementing this initiative across all pedestrian signals state-wide is not possible and would unnecessarily impact on traffic flow in some areas.
Automated Audio Tactile Pedestrian Signals are being gradually rolled out in the following health precincts:
- Sydney Children’s Hospital – Randwick
- Prince of Wales Hospital – Randwick
- Royal Prince Alfred Hospital – Camperdown
- St Vincent’s Hospital – Darlinghurst
- The Children’s Hospital at Westmead – Westmead
- Westmead Hospital – Westmead
- Liverpool Hospital – Liverpool
- Nepean Hospital – Kingswood
- St George Hospital NSW – Kogarah
- Royal North Shore Hospital – St Leonards
- Blacktown Hospital – Blacktown
