What is independent living?

Living independently is about living the way you want; enjoying activities and doing the things that are meaningful for you in life. That could include things like reading your favourite books, cooking meals for friends and family, watching TV and movies, choosing your clothes for the day, and much more.

If you have low vision or blindness—or you’ve recently experienced a change in vision—you’ll likely need to develop unique skills and techniques to support you in achieving these goals. Independent Living is about providing that support, through:

  • Low vision services: where you can understand your level of functional vision and learn techniques to read different printed materials.
  • Occupational Therapy: where you can learn a range of skills and techniques to use in everyday life.
  • Assistive Technology: identifying and using the right technology and devices to make your life easier.

About Low Vision Services

Perhaps you’d like to read your mail, flip through the newspaper, or learn about the ingredients in different products at the supermarket for your dietary requirements?

Maybe you’ll be able to see the TV better if you sit at a certain angle in your lounge room?

Once we understand your unique level of vision, we’ll work with you to understand your unique goals and assist you to make life easier when reading text, watching TV, and more.

About Occupational Therapy

Can you choose your clothes from the wardrobe before you head out for the day? Perhaps you’d like to take up gardening and remove the weeds from your lawn?

If low vision or blindness is preventing you from these types of activities, you can learn new skills in Occupational Therapy to help get them done.
